Your bhindi crop looks perfect for the first few weeks. Then one morning, you notice the veins on a few leaves turning bright yellow. Within days, more plants show the same pattern, the pods become small and pale, and buyers at the mandi start offering a lower price.

Yellow Vein Mosaic Disease is caused by Bhendi Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (BYVMV), a member of the begomovirus group. It was first recorded in India more than a hundred years ago and is now found wherever bhindi is grown.
The disease is feared because of how much yield it can destroy. Research shows that when plants get infected at an early stage, fruit yield can drop by as much as 96%, and in badly affected fields losses can reach 100%. Plants infected in the first three weeks usually stay stunted and never produce a proper crop.

Step 1: Choose Newer Resistant Varieties
Start with seed. ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, has released newer varieties with resistance to both yellow vein mosaic and enation leaf curl. Kashi Chaman suits both summer and rainy seasons, Kashi Pragati is recommended for Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan, and Kashi Sahishnu for Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Step 2: Sow Smart
Avoid sowing when whitefly activity is at its peak in your area, especially for susceptible varieties. Maintain proper spacing so air moves through the crop. Sowing two or three rows of maize or sorghum around the field creates a living barrier that reduces whitefly entry.

Walk your field twice a week. Pull out any plant showing yellow veins in the early weeks and destroy it away from the field. Don't leave uprooted plants on the bund, where whiteflies can keep feeding on them.
